Garage Ceiling Storage: making use of all available space

Written by Joe on April 2nd, 2010 | Posted in Featured | No Comments

The garage ceiling storage units are a great way to utilize the space above your head. If your garage has dormers and rafters, then the process of installing an overhead storage unit is considerably easier. You just lay planks across the beams and secure them in place. This is as secure as the garage itself but overloading is still possible. Plank and not plywood should be used. The ladder leading up can be a permanent fixture in the back of the garage or else a portable ladder can be used. For heavy objects, a set of pulleys can be used that are attached to a beam.

If you have a finished garage, this rafter option is not available, but you can still make use of the space. This can be done by mounting a rack system to the ceiling and the nearest wall. The anchors themselves must be on the studs in the walls and the beams in the ceiling. This will keep the racks in place and prevent any accidents from happening.

The style of these racks do vary. There are the open metal mesh ones that allow for clear vision of all the contents. Most only have this mesh on the bottom for the easiest access to all parts of the rack. Some of them do have sides with mesh covers. There are others that have a nylon mesh rope for the sides to help keep the contents secure.

Whichever type of garage ceiling storage you choose to use, make sure the anchors are done correctly to keep the rack in place and not on top of your vehicle.
